Our mission is to support the maintenance, operation, and long-term preservation of Riverside National Cemetery by managing an endowment fund, organizing meaningful national holiday ceremonies, and advancing programs that honor the service and sacrifice of our veterans.

A Flag for Every Hero is one of the most powerful and moving tributes held at Riverside National Cemetery. This annual community event brings together thousands of volunteers who gather to honor the men and women who served our nation by placing an American flag at every gravesite throughout the cemetery.

An Inspirational Description

On the morning of the event, families, veterans, students, and community members assemble at the cemetery’s amphitheater for a brief ceremony of remembrance. After the opening tribute, volunteers quietly spread out across the rolling hills of the cemetery carrying small American flags in their hands.

Within hours, something remarkable happens. One by one, more than 250,000 flags are gently placed beside the headstones of the heroes who rest there. What begins as a quiet walk of remembrance transforms the cemetery into a breathtaking sea of red, white, and blue.

Each flag represents a life of service—someone who once wore the uniform, defended freedom, and answered the call of duty. For many volunteers, the moment of placing a flag becomes deeply personal. Some pause to read the names etched in stone, some salute, and others simply stand in silent reflection.

The event was first organized in 2012 through a partnership with the nonprofit Honoring Our Fallen, with the goal of ensuring that every veteran resting at the cemetery receives a visible symbol of gratitude from the nation they served.

By the end of the morning, the entire cemetery stands transformed—row after row of American flags waving gently in the breeze, a powerful reminder that the freedoms we enjoy today were secured through the courage and sacrifice of those who came before us.

“A Flag for Every Hero” is more than a ceremony—it is a promise from the community that the service and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes will never be forgotten.
